About Stephen Newey
So I guess I'm supposed to tell you something about myself here. I'm Steve, I'm 26 (and not quite sure how that happened) and I'm something of a geek. I spent the early years of my life tapping away for hours on end at my Amiga 500 when I wasn't at school nerding up on my preferred subjects of English, Science and History. A combination that I'm sure will one day be useful in some fashion.
Things that excite me include the use of technology (open source software in particular) to enable digital inclusion and more diverse ICT education, creating new and interesting applications to make television a more social experience, and generally converging all forms of media and electronic communication into IP delivered (and preferably web-based) vendor-neutral services.
I love taking existing hardware and software and combining it in new and unintended ways, being challenged to solve unusual problems and delivering clever and inexpensive solutions. I currently work for a small consulting company called Regenology doing a job that gives me the opportunity do what I love. Before that I worked for Newham.net rolling out an open source IPTV solution across a social housing project. And before that I spent many years developing content management systems and SMS-driven applications in PHP for Evolving Media.
These days my platform of choice is Debian or Ubuntu Linux powered servers running applications built in Django, which has been delighting me for a couple of years now with it's power and simplicity. It has helped me build this site along with all sorts of interesting systems for Regenology's clients, along with a lot of more general purpose creative Python hacking.
When I'm not working I spend lots of time with friends, get creative in the kitchen, walk in the countryside (sometimes with Geocaching to geekify it) and read less often than I think I should.
